AHS Crew Keeps Ahead of the Heat

AHS Crew Keeps Ahead of the Heat

We're experiencing uncomfortably hot temperatures in Avon this week. It's not a good time to encounter a problem with a school air conditioning system. There's one crew that has been responsible for making sure students and staff have remained cool at Avon High School — a school with systems and structures currently receiving a major overhaul. It's been no small task.

In addition to staying ahead of the temperatures, Avon's Facilities crew has sent several updates throughout the day this Tuesday. The following excerpts show how they've remained hard at work:

9:02 am: Mike, Nate, Steve, and I all converged at the high school this morning regarding warm air reports. As often sometimes happens during construction, there was confusion regarding what valves should be open, what pumps should be on, and [etcetera]. When we arrived, we found the south chiller plant, all chilled water pumps, and all frequency drives either not running, or physically in the “OFF” position. ... We have since been able to re-start the south chillers, turn all pumps and air handlers to their normal positions, feed all of the air handling units from the correct chiller plant, and are currently regaining cooler temperatures with lower humidity.

9:22 am: Nate and Steve will both be monitoring the system closely this week. A little good news is our chilled water supply temp is down to 44 deg. It will still take all day but at least we are making good progress.

3:20 pm: All chillers are currently up and running. The HS gym temp is now 72 degrees. Room temperatures throughout the building have nearly all reached setpoint. Steve found a faulty chilled water actuator on the fieldhouse air handler. He manually opened the chilled water valve and temperatures are continuing to fall. Both Nate Beck and Steve Allen will monitor the building through the evening hours. If you see Nate or Steve, please offer a “high five”. Their response ... was outstanding.

We agree. The members of the AHS Facilities department all deserve a high five!

Thanks for making it comfortable for our students and staff at AHS.
