AHS Senior Smashes Scoring and Steals Records

by Will Staal

Avon High School senior Aniah Smith had quite a week last week. She broke both the all-time scoring and steals records for Avon girls basketball.

Aniah helped lead the Avon Orioles to a 3-0 week with wins over undefeated Plainfield, a tough Evansville Central team on the road, and a big win over Lebanon on Senior Night. The Orioles are 8-3 on the season with five wins in a row, and they are winners of eight of their last nine games. This ties for the best start since 2006, and second best start in the 2000s.

During the 75-74 win over Evansville Central, Aniah became Avon's all-time leading scorer, passing Heather Farrell’s 1989 record of 1,322 points. Aniah currently sits at 1,364 career points as an Oriole. That was not the only school record she set in Evansville. Aniah also became the all-time steals leader with 305. Smith passed Kami Phelps’ 1993 record of 296 steals.

Smith's stat line last week was as equally impressive as the big wins.

  • 18 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals (57-54 win vs Plainfield)
  • 32 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 8 steals (75-74 win vs Evansville Central)
  • 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals (63-36 win vs Lebanon)

Aniah now holds the following AHS records:

  • career scoring
  • career steals
  • points in a game (39)
  • scoring in a season
  • steals in a game (18)
  • steals in a season

The girls basketball season is rolling on, and there are a limited number of chances to see Aniah and the rest of the team in action. Visit the AHS Athletics webpage for schedules and ticketing. Make plans to come out in support of the Orioles!
