AHS Speech & Debate Season Summary

The Avon Speech and Debate team recently ended their 2023-24 season. The team has much to celebrate, and they are looking forward to sending 15 students to Nationals this summer. Take a look at their season in review.

The team:

  • Included 70 students (in 2019-20, the team had nine)
  • Competed in 14 speech and/or debate tournaments (12 speech meets and 8 debate meets – some meets overlapped)
  • First place sweepstakes winners in 6 tournaments
  • 2nd Place in State for Speech Team, Class 3A Division
  • 7th place in State for Debate Team, overall
  • Team HCC Conference Champions
  • Team Sectional Champions
  • Team Hoosier Crossroads Champions
  • 2 individual state champions – Katherine Langford in Student Congress and Liam Hoffman in International Extemporaneous
  • 31 students qualified for state competition
  • 10 state finalists (top 6) in speech and debate.
  • Bill Hicks Scholarship Winner for Most Significant Congress debater in the state awarded to Katherine Langford.
  • District Award Winner for the Most Significant Senior Speech Team member in the district award to Zainab Syed
  • Qualified 15 students for Nationals tournament in Phoenix in June
  • Served in the Avon community by presenting at various organization meetings and volunteered at the Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry

A final celebration for the team and families is planned on Wednesday, April 19. At the gathering, they will honor the 63 students who have National Speech and Debate Honor Society degrees. They will also issue senior cords and letters, and other special recognitions.
