AHS Tennis Complex Earns USTA Outstanding Facility Award

AHS Tennis Complex Earns USTA Outstanding Facility Award

Avon High School's tennis facility has been recognized on the national stage, earning a 2026 Outstanding Facility Award from the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

The award recognizes excellence in the construction and renovation of tennis facilities across the country and honors facilities that provide exceptional opportunities for athletes and the community. The USTA named the AHS Tennis Center as one of just 41 facilities nationwide to receive the distinction in 2026.

To celebrate the honor, AHS Tennis Coach Robert Mize and Superintendent Dr. Scott Wyndham attended an awards reception at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City during the 2026 US Open. (No Avon Community School Corporation funds were used.)

The recognition follows the completion of AHS's new tennis courts, which opened in 2025. The project addressed aging courts that had deteriorated beyond repair and would have required a complete reconstruction. Rather than rebuilding the courts in their original location immediately south of the school, district leaders developed a plan that would better serve both student-athletes and the broader school community.

The new tennis complex was constructed just south and west of the football stadium. Relocating the courts created space for a significant expansion of parking immediately adjacent to the school building, resulting in hundreds of additional parking spaces for students, staff, and visitors.

Coach Mize reflected on the program’s evolution: “We were in desperate need of new courts, and  our administrators listened.  It takes a village to make great things happen. The tennis program is honored to have the support of our tennis parents, school corporation leaders, the AHS Athletic Department, our Grounds Coordinator, and so many more who played a role in providing  our community a tennis center everyone can be proud of.”

According to the USTA, award-winning facilities are evaluated on numerous factors, including overall design, court quality, lighting, aesthetics, spectator accommodations, ease of maintenance, and contributions to grassroots tennis programs.

“This recognition reflects the thoughtful planning and investment that went into creating a first-class facility for our students and community,” said Dr. Wyndham. “We are honored that Avon High School's tennis complex has been recognized among the best facilities in the nation.”

The award highlights Avon's commitment to maximizing resources to meet the evolving needs of students, staff, and the community.
