April Is School Library Month

April is School Library Month in the Avon Community School Corporation libraries. Here are some examples about what is happening in your school library.

Finding good books

School librarians are certified teachers with an additional teaching certification or a Master’s Degree in Library Science. They are specifically trained in finding good books that match up to student needs. Did you know that 67% of children ages 6-17 find books to read for fun from libraries? (Scholastic) 

Teaching Research

School librarians are trained in teaching students how to do research and guiding students to determine what makes a good source. Students are taught how to be ethical users of information by citing their sources.

Diverse needs

The benefits associated with good library programs are strongest for the most vulnerable and at-risk learners, including students of color, low-income students, and students with disabilities; students who may not otherwise have access to high-quality reading materials. (Lance and Kachel)

Digital Citizenship

School librarians are trained in teaching students how to navigate the digital world and become good online citizens. 

Read Alouds

School Librarians read to students, which makes a connection between the spoken and written word.

This year, we've highlighted our school libraries by publishing book reviews from students from across the district in a feature called 'The Library Minute'.
