Hello, Avon families.

As we wrap up another week of school, I want to take a moment to talk about something that has a tremendous impact on student success: attendance.

This week marked the 18th day of school. In other words, we are over 10% of the way through the school year. That number is important because Indiana now defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% or more of the school year, or about 18 days, for any reason.

The good news is that most Avon students are showing up, participating, and building positive routines. The state accountability rules require students to maintain 94% attendance. As of today, 20% (or 1 out of every 5 of our students) are not meeting that 94% state expectation. The good news is that it only takes a few weeks of good attendance for individuals to reverse that trend.

Every day of school matters. When students miss school, they miss instruction, class discussions, hands-on learning experiences, and important opportunities to connect with teachers and classmates. Those missed experiences can add up quickly.

I also want families to know that Indiana's updated attendance laws are focused on early communication and intervention, not punishment. We understand that students sometimes get sick and there are legitimate reasons for absences. If your child must miss school, please communicate with your school and provide the necessary documentation.
