Latino Students Prepare for Virtual Summit

Avon High School Latino students gathered recently for a luncheon with Guidance Counselors, teachers, and two representatives from the Indiana Latino Institute (ILI), Kennya Santiago and Jocelyn Ortiz. 

The purpose of the luncheon—with food generously provided by La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant—was to make sure Avon students are aware of the 10th Annual Indiana Latino Education Summit and College & Career Fair. This event is being held virtually on Saturday, November 6. Students enjoyed learning about how ILI supports the Latino community through advocacy efforts aimed at improving public health and advancing education opportunities through advocacy, research, and culturally responsive programs. 

ILI representatives were impressed. "The students and counselors at Avon High School are so engaged," said Ortiz. "I was so pleased to see a school that gives Latino students a place to be themselves and that gives them the support they need to succeed. As we talk to other high schools around the state, we use Avon High School as our example for how schools can and should support their students."

AHS students who attended the luncheon—and many more who couldn't—are excited to attend the summit this Saturday.

About the Virtual Summit

The 2021 Education Summit and College & Career Fair will be held online this Saturday, November 6, from 10:00 am-12:30 pm.

Attendees will:

• Identify scholarship and financial aid opportunities
• Explore universities and businesses at the College and Career Fair
• Attend workshops on Financial Aid, College Application Process & Choosing the Right College, and Navigating COVID-19
• Workshops will be provided in English and Spanish

This event is completely free and is geared toward Latino high school students and parents, but is open to anyone interested in joining.
