More than a Day at the Lake

More than a Day at the Lake

Students in Cory Falk and Jared Johnson's Intro to Engineering Design class at Avon High School participated in a unique and creative design project. They used biomimicry to create fishing lures. A couple of the advanced classes even went fishing at Washington Township Park to test their results.

Students had the freedom to 3D print their lures or fashion them by pouring resin or silicone rubber into molds they created. When they were satisfied with their handiwork, they headed to the lake.

"Not everyone had a successful trip in regards to catching fish (some caught more branches)," says Engineering and Technology Teacher Cory Falk, "but most of the lures worked well and a handful of students caught some nice ones."

What an exciting, real-world project, and an excellent example of the type of STEM programming that sets AHS apart.
