Students Plan Black History Celebration at AHS

"Students are so hungry for positive representation," says Avon High School Business Teacher and African Diaspora Club Co-Sponsor Ranielle Moore. "This event is going to be a celebration, a chance to get together, have an incredible time, and work to counter the divisions that exist in our world."

With the support of Moore and African Diaspora Club Co-Sponsor/Spanish Teacher Juli Robinson, two dozen AHS students have planned this year's Black History Celebration, an annual AHS event stretching back 14 years. Students have put together an exciting event with a laid-back attitude that will include refreshments, dance, plenty of time to interact, and a panel discussion featuring several AHS staff and community leaders. "The students wrote the questions, and they'll lead the discussion," says Moore. "It's their event."

There's a purpose behind the fun and entertainment. 

"Here at AHS, we always say 'We are Avon. We are one!' However, some students still don't feel completely welcomed or embraced," says Moore. "That's why we chose our theme, 'Stronger Together'. Our students believe that we can bridge the gaps that keep people separated from one another. That's what the Black History Celebration is all about."
