What ALL Belong, Learn & Grow Means

Avon High School Spanish/Multilingual Learner Teacher and ASCAP Co-Sponsor Meghan Goers emailed school administrators early in August to share a significant moment that occurred during a building tour with some of her new multilingual learners. Her email, presented below with minor edits for this format, explains what we mean when we say ALL belong, learn, and grow in Avon.

“Miss, that is my language!” New AHS Student

My multilingual newcomer students have been learning about classes, teachers, schedules, and places in the building. We went for a walk through most of the building today so they could be confident in knowing how to find places like the clinic, student services, the gym, and et cetera. ... They saw the wall that includes [AHS values in] a variety of languages. They were so excited and told me, “Miss, that is my language!” when they saw Arabic on the wall. [These two students] are brothers from Sudan. It was the first time I have seen [one of them] “light up” this year.

"This confirms why we represent our student body in a variety of ways around the school," says Principal Matt Shockley.
