What'd you do this summer?

What'd you do this summer?

As students and staff return to school from summer vacation, one of the most frequently repeated questions overheard in the halls will be, "What did you do this summer?"

Avon High School senior Grant Shirley will have a lot to share. He'll be excited to tell his friends stories about his two-week trip to Cape Verde, an island nation off the coast of western Africa where nearly a quarter of the population lives in poverty. During his trip with HumanitarianXP, he helped construct a preschool. According to the trip description on the HXP website, the work Grant and his team accomplished this summer "will allow more children to have regular education in classrooms in their local towns, therefore building on the crucial foundation needed for their futures."

Humanitarian work is important to Grant, a lesson that's being reinforced to him during his time at AHS. He actually wore his Junior Day of Caring t-shirt during the trip.

It's wonderful to see a young man representing AHS so well on the other side of the globe. Way to go, Grant!
