Area 31
Your career choice makes a big difference to your future. It affects how much money you make, your lifestyle and the satisfaction you feel from what you do every day. You can set an exciting new direction for yourself at Area 31 Career Center!
Area 31 Career Center is way more than high school. Area 31 is high school with direction, hands-on learning and real-world work experience. Prepare yourself for a high-wage, high-demand career right out of high school OR get a head start on your college degree. Earn college credits that can be transferred to a two or four year college.
Area 31 students attend career preparation classes for a half-day - either morning or afternoon - everyday. The other half of the day is spent at Avon High School. Most Area 31 career programs are based at Ben Davis High School, but Area 31 students come from 11 different high schools.

JAG Program
Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) is a state-based, national non-profit organization dedicated to helping high school students of promise achieve success after graduation. JAG is a resiliency-building program that gives students an advantage over their peers by helping them learn in-demand employability and leadership skills. The opportunities, activities and experiences JAG offers help to provide a bridge to post-secondary education and career advancement opportunities.
Key Components of Avon JAG:
- Service Learning Projects All are planned and implemented by the students. Service learning is a core component of JAG, building teamwork, project planning, communication and leadership skills. Students benefit from building strong connections with and a desire to serve their community.
- Guest Speakers Students can connect with people in their field of interest, as well as gain information about trades, the military, and post-secondary options.
- Competitions JAG students can participate in the annual Career Development Conference, Students In Action public pitch day, and others. These opportunities are great résumé, network and workplace skill builders.
- Leadership Skills Students can hold a position in our JAG Career Association, which is a club embedded within the JAG program. Though this is a club, a vast majority of the activities will take place during the school day.
- Financial Literacy Students receive lessons in taxes, budgeting, banking, credit, retirement, insurance and more to assist them in being confident and successful financially after graduation.
- Post-Secondary planning Students will have the opportunity to speak with admissions officers from various colleges and universities, and have assistance applying to college. JAG offers several avenues through which students can potentially earn scholarships. All seniors will have personal assistance applying for the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Career Exploration Students are required to complete a career exploration project over the career of their choice. Prior to Covid restrictions, field trips to colleges, area businesses and workforce training facilities were a part of the JAG experience. We are hoping these activities will resume in the fall. NOTE: JAG checks box 2 of Graduation Pathways.
- One year of Mentorship after Graduation Students check in with their JAG Specialist every month for one year after graduation. Students receive adult mentoring while in school and one year of follow-up counseling after graduation.
The JAG program is funded through grants provided by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Avon’s JAG program was established in January of 2017, and is currently the only Jobs for America’s Graduates program in Hendricks County.
